Story

For the next Jelte is a powerful documentary about the fight to bring inborn errors of metabolism out of the shadows.

Told through three deeply personal perspectives - a family, a physician, and a fundraiser - the film reveals how science, emotion, and strategy come together in one shared mission: to change the narrative around a group of diseases that affect thousands of children worldwide, yet remain largely unknown.

The documentary follows a full year in the lives of its three central protagonists. At the heart of the story is the family of Jelte: a young boy living with a severe metabolic condition. The voice of his parents carries the emotional weight of the film, giving an honest and moving account of life with an invisible but devastating disease. Alongside her, we follow Prof. Sabine Fuchs, a pioneering pediatrician and researcher, who brings both scientific depth and human connection to the screen. The film also follows Jan Matthijs van Eendenburg, director of Metakids, as he leads a bold effort to unite a fragmented field and bring these diseases into public view, culminating in a record-breaking national campaign reaching millions.

The film includes scenes filmed during the 2024 SSIEM Congress in Porto, highlighting the vital role of the international scientific community.

For the next Jelte is not only a story of urgency and resilience. It is a case study in how collaboration and storytelling can mobilize awareness, funding, and change.
